Barren planet is a type of terrestrial planet which lacks vegetation (hence the term 'Barren'), is dry, and has little to no atmosphere. The planet's surface are mostly rocky with common features like mountains, canyons, plateaus, and craters. In our Solar System, Mercury and Mars are classified as Barren planets.

There are probable extrasolar barren planet candidates. Terrestrial planets orbiting around pulsars, including three around PSR B1257+12, are likely barren planets as they have almost no atmosphere and are uninhabitable.

Assuming the Earth survives the Sun's eventual gas giant phase and explosion; it is likely Earth will become a barren planet.
